Best Places to Stay in Hoi An for Short & Long Stays

Hoi An is a beautiful town that should be on every traveller’s list. I loved Hoi An, and it was one of my favourite places in Vietnam.

However, where you stay in Hoi An can significantly impact how you experience the town.

Especially if you are a digital nomad or slow traveller, I recommend being very picky about where you stay.

After spending a month exploring Hoi An, there are definitely some areas that I would not have liked to stay in.

If you choose the wrong area, you may be surrounded by noise and huge tourist crowds. But if you choose the right area, you could be surrounded by smiling locals and quiet streets like we were.

In this guide, I will take you through the best places to stay in Hoi An, Vietnam, based on our one-month stay there, including:

• Where to stay for a short vs long term stay
• The best neighbourhoods for digital nomads
• Which areas feel local, bustling or beachy
• Honest pros and cons (areas I would not stay)

Important Booking Warning Vietnam 🚨 Be very careful when using Booking.com in Vietnam. There are tonnes of fake hotel reviews.

I recommend sorting reviews from low to high when you find a place you like. If there are a ton of 1-star reviews saying they don’t understand why the reviews are so high. Then they most likely have fake reviews.

In all my recommendations, I have looked at ALL the reviews to make sure there are no scam properties with fake reviews. Many of my recommendations are from Booking.com because it is often cheaper than Airbnb.

1. Old Town: Most Convenient For Short Trips

The Old Town of Hoi An is what brings thousands of tourists into town every day.

We walked the streets many times, and I never got sick of the lantern-filled streets and beautiful architecture.

There is a unique fusion of European and Asian architecture, along with the lanterns, that is unlike anything I have seen while travelling around the world.

If this is your first time in Hoi An or you’re visiting for 2–3 days, this is one of the best areas to stay in Hoi An simply for the convenience.

You will be walking distance to all the best banh mi, most of the best cafes and many of the best things to do in Hoi An, which are mostly located in or close to the old town.

But the main negative is that the old town does not feel like a ‘real’ town. Everything is catered towards tourists, and it almost feels a bit like a theme park in parts.

I enjoyed visiting the old town. But it was because we only went in a couple of times a week. If I were right in the middle of it, I think I might get sick of how touristy it is.

In the old town, it is also much more likely to be loud from busy roads, restaurants and bars. So if you are looking for somewhere quiet to relax or get some work done it might not be the greatest place for you.

Overall, I think that staying close to the old town is great if you are on a short trip to Hoi An. If you are staying longer, prices will be lower further out, and you can get away from the touristy zones.

• Convenience: It is super easy to walk most places
• Restaurants and Cafes: Walking distance to most of the best places to eat and drink
• Architecture: You are surrounded by the beautiful buildings of the old town.

❌ Cons Of Staying In The Old Town

• Touristy: This is the center of the tourist zone, so many areas are overrun with tourists, and it does not feel authentic.
• Noise: The Old Town is much busier, so it is harder to find quiet areas.
• Prices: Accommodation will be more expensive here, especially if you are staying long-term.

• Budget Option – Nha Lan Homestay is run by a local family in the old town, and a room costs just 15 USD per night. The reviews sound like the host family is super nice, and the location cannot be beat.
• Mid-Tier Option – Aloha Hoi An Homestay is also run by a local family and is located in a beautiful old building that will really make you feel like you are in the old town. People in the reviews loved the food cooked in the on-site restaurant.
• High End Option – Allegro Hoi An is where to go if you want the old charm of Hoi An but modern conveniences like a gym, pool, big TV, and large bathroom. I saw rooms for around 100 USD, but they can be closer to 270 USD. It is expensive for Vietnam! But the reviews are excellent, so if you want to splash out, this is the place to go.

• Mia Homestay is perfectly located. Right on the edge of the old town but in a quiet spot. Rooms are clean, and the hosts are friendly.
• Good Morning Hoi An Homestay is another convenient homestay close to the old town. They have very comfortable beds, which can be hard to find in Vietnam!
• Hoi An Heart Lodge has perfect reviews, breakfast included, and a kitchenette on your own balcony. Looks like one of the best places to stay in the old town if you have a larger budget.

TIP: When you are exploring the old town at night, areas by the river get insanely busy and are not very nice to explore. But just head to the streets more inland, and they are usually nearly empty and super beautiful.

2. Cam Nam Island: Local Life Right Across The Bridge

If you do not like the idea of being in the middle of the busy and slightly hectic old town.

But you still want to be close to the action. Then you should check out Cam Nam Island.

This island, in the river across from the Old Town, still feels very local despite being within walking distance of the old town.

As soon as you cross the bridge from the old town, the pace of life feels much more chilled.

We visited Cam Nam Island to try a Pho spot that looked great on Google Maps. Unfortunately, the pho was terrible! But we really liked the island.

The narrow streets of the island are full of local families going about their day-to-day lives. So you can get a real feel of daily Vietnamese life here.

If you are a long-term traveller or digital nomad, there are also some great options on Cam Nam Island. You can get some very nice rooms for as low as $335 USD.

✅ Pros Of Staying On Cam Nam Island

• Location: Walking distance to the old town
• Atmosphere: Despite being close to the old town, there is a much more local feel to the streets
• Greenness: There are green fields and the river. So you can get the feeling of being in the countryside while being close to the old town

❌ Cons Of Staying On Can Nam Island

• Amenities: There are fewer restaurants, cafes, gyms, etc. on the island. This may be important to you if you are a long-term traveller.
• Noise: More likely to hear roosters or other farm life. I know some people hate roosters!

• Maison Khoi Homestay only a 10 minute walk to the old town so the price is hard to beat. Clean rooms and friendly hosts it is perfect if you are on a budget.
• The Quin Riverside Villa great breakfast included and awesome river views if you pay for a more expensive room. Great option if you want to be closer to nature.
• Moire Hoi An is one of the best high end hotels in Hoi An. Great place to stay if you want to splash out and stay next to the river.

• Fairy Garden Villa at only $340 this villa is hard to beat in terms of value for money. The roomsa are beautiful, there is a pool and jacuzzi and the owners are a very friendly local couple.
• Autum Bay Retreat has amazing river views that are hard to beat. Reviews said they stayed for a month and loved it. There are desks in the rooms and it is in a quiet part of the island making it perfect to get some work done.
• Calm House – our friends stayed here and they loved it. The property is beautiful and quiet and there is an excellent breakfast you can pay for. The restaurant on-site also makes tasty food if you do not feel like leaving to eat out.

3. Cam Thanh & Cam Son: The Digital Nomad Hub (Rice Paddies And Co-Working)

Cam Thanh and Cam Son are part of the big green circle on my map at the start.

In this part of town, you are away from the old town and close to rice fields and also a bit closer to the beach.

We didn’t stay in this area, but I think it may be the best area if you are staying in Hoi An long-term.

You are away from the noise of the old town. The Hub Cowork is located here which is by far the best cowork in Hoi An. Plus, there are still plenty of gyms, restaurants, cafes and Hub Cowork is also in this region.

Add in the fact that you are closer to the beach, and it makes the perfect place for long-term travellers and digital nomads.

✅ Pros Of Staying In Cam Thanh

• Nature: Close to rice fields, rivers and the beach
• Amenities: Best location if you want to be near restaurants, cafes, gyms and co-works
• Beach: Closer to An Bang beach than other areas in Hoi An

❌ Cons Of Staying In Cam Thanh

• Walkability: You will have to ride a bike or a scooter to get to the old town

• Song River Homestay breakfast is included in the price for this property which is amazing value for money. Walking distance to local markets that are great for cheap food.
• Jade Hoi An Rice Paddies the best part of this property is the rice paddy views. If it is the right time of year the green rice paddies are spectacular to watch at sunset.
• Grand Sunrise Hotel this is one of the cheapest 5 star hotels I have seen anywhere in the world. I am not the type to stay in 5 star hotels but if I had to I would try this one out because it is so cheap and the reviews are perfect.

• Coco Village Homestay some of the best value for money in the whole of Hoi An. Clean and tidy rooms and great location.
• Herbal Tea Homestay has some of the best reviews I found in Hoi An. Everyone loves the owners. So if having a connection with your hosts is important this could be a great option for you.
• Winhouse Villa this is a place I would book if we had a larger budget. Each Villa has its own little lounge with a tv and the gardens of the property look beautiful.

4. An Bang Beach: For A Laidback Coastal Vibe

Hoi An is not known as a beach town, even though An Bang beach is just a 10-minute drive from the old town.

Despite the proximity, An Bang definitely has a bit of a small-town beach vibe. So if you love beaches, this could be the place for you.

Many people complain that An Bang is not the nicest beach and that it is dirty.

But I did not find that to be the case. I often rode my bike there in the morning for beautiful sunrises, and there was not much rubbish on the beach.

Because it is Southeast Asia, there is more plastic washing up on the beach than in other parts of the world. But you cannot avoid that.

On calm days, the beach can be very beautiful and during super hot Hoi An says it is nice to be near the ocean breeze.

So if you love watching sunrise and sunset at the beach, An Bang Beach could be the place for you to stay.

✅ Pros Of Staying In An Bang Beach

• Atmosphere: Relaxed beach village vibe
• Traffic: Much less traffic than other areas in Hoi An
• Walkability: You have to drive to town but you can always walk on the beach

❌ Cons Of Staying In An Bang Beach

• Distance: To get to the old town, you will have to ride a scooter or a bike
• Amenities: Fewer restaurants and cafes than near the old town
• Price: Accommodation is quite a bit more expensive here

• Winhouse An Bang is hard to beat if you are on a budget. Located on the main road of town, there are lots of places to eat right next door. Just a couple of minutes walk to the beach.
• The Linh Coastline Villa brand new villa with a Mediterranean vibe. At the end of the village, so should be quiet.
• An Bang Hideaway located right on the beach, really feels like a beach house. The property is lush and green, and I would stay here if I wanted to splash out.

• Hoi An Corner Homestay is the best value for money on An Bang for digital nomads. Proper desks in the rooms, free water and a washing machine. So it has everything you need for a long-term stay.
• An Bang Sea Adventure is a little bit further from the beach but still within walking distance. Visitors love the owner, who is super friendly and always willing to help out with everything. The property has some of the best reviews I have seen in the whole of Hoi An.
• Red Flower Homestay beautiful cottages with plenty of space. Some units have their own kitchenette. Great place to stay if your budget is a little higher

5. Cam Ha: For Authentic Local Experiences

Cam Ha is where we stayed while in Hoi An. It is a less popular location to stay because it is far away from most attractions.

But it is a great place to stay if you want cheap accommodation and to be in more local neighbourhoods.

We stayed in Cam Ha simply because we found a super cheap Airbnb. But we ended up loving staying there because of the local experiences.

Every morning, all the locals smiled and said hello to us, and our local pho stall was always so happy to see us. It felt a million miles away from the old town of Hoi An.

So if you really want to be in a true Vietnamese village, staying in Cam Ha may be for you.

I think that because Cam Ha is further from tourist attractions, it is best for long term stays. So I have not added any short-term stays in the table below.

• Culture: Less tourists so more local interactions
• Atmosphere: Not touristy some areas feel like the countryside

❌ Cons Of Staying In Cam Ha

• Location: Is quite far from everything you will need a scooter or bike to get around
• Walkability: It is not a very walkable area
• Amenities: Not as many restaurants and cafes.

Where to Stay in Cam Ha?

I have only included long-term stays in the Cam Ha region because I think it is best to stay here if you are in Hoi An long-term.

• Hoi An Aroma Villa is where we stayed while in Hoi An, and we loved it. It is quite isolated, so do not stay here if you want to be close to the action. But if you want to be in the countryside surrounded by friendly locals, this could be a great option.
• Little Library Villa is another very cheap option that is similar to Aroma Villa, where we stayed. The only negative for me is that it does not have a kitchen. But it is closer to town.
• Melody Boutique Villa has beautiful modern rooms and a super-friendly owner. The host also cooks breakfast for a small fee that guests love.
